“Nowadays, I often yearn to press the
backspace button or hit return but life is not no word processor”
– J. Cole on Royce Da 5’9″‘s “Boblo Boat“
When you’re leading a busy life and things are coming at you from all angles, it can get pretty overwhelming. And when your head is spinning from all that’s going on, you can also be left spinning. It’s not easy. When things like that happen, it’s important to take a step back, take it all in, and get organized.
Whatup y’all? What’s going on? Welcome to the March 2018 Opinions Column (just made it, phew). For those that’re new to the site, this is the place where I talk about what’s going on with me and give you a glimpse behind the curtains. For those returning, welcome back! You already know how it goes. So yeah, let’s talk about the importance of getting organized.
I’ve been out of town this past week and I was thinking about all the things that were waiting for me when I got back. I had my next vlog to edit, another couple of rhymes to record, a few new beats to write to, some music equipment I need to buy, and a few graphics I needed to design too. I was thinking about when I had time to do all that and how I need to write it all down. I also thought about what takes priority and what can wait. The main takeaway from this? I was thinking about all of it. So when that happens, my head can get pretty cluttered…which can lead to stress, anxiety, and so on. I was beginning to realize just how much I had going on and it was whoa.
I had to take a step back and remind myself that whenever this happens, it’s important to get organized. Write it down. Put it on your phone’s calendar. Make a spreadsheet. Do whatever it takes but don’t let all the work live in your head and make you worry. It’s easy, especially when you’re a personality like me, to take on all these new and exciting projects. An opportunity to create? A session with another artist? A new fire beat to write to? Yup, it’s all fun until it gets to become too much and things get messy. I’m not saying you shouldn’t do it all (unless of course it really is too much), but instead to get organized. Once you have a solid gameplan of HOW you’re going to accomplish all those things, it feels a lot better.
So when I got back from my out-of-town trip, I looked at my planner and wrote down what I had to do for the next few days along with the month ahead. I also took a glance at my tracklist for the upcoming album to make sure everything is on track. And yes, as I finished items I crossed them off the list (and oh how liberating that felt lol).
Whatever your process is, get organized. It gives you less to worry about and more time to focus on what’s important. Word up. And now that I’m more organized, I’m gonna spend the next few weeks breaking down those items into sub-items and get even more organized. Fun times await.
I hope that helped you as much as it helps me. Here’s to some spring cleaning.
Being cleans beats being filthy, doesn’t it? Which reminds me, did I tell you that’s the name of the newest song/video I did? Haha talk about a shameless plug.
And that’ll do it for me y’all. I gotta get even more organized haha. Plus there’s this album of mine I need to work on too, of course. Until next time, stay up, stay safe, and hold ya head. Ajaxxx signing out, PEACEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
