“And lately I’ve been contemplating
Escaping to get away and go wherever this road takes me
It’s making me crazy”
– Eminem on “In My Head“
It’s really easy to overthink things. With me, I’m constantly thinking what will happen, what may happen, and other potential scenarios before taking action. And when you’re overthinking, you’re likely hindering progress and preventing execution. So, what do you do?
Before we answer that, welcome everyone! Welcome to the Ajaxxx.com March 2019 Opinions Column. For those that are new to the site, this is the place where I talk about what’s going on with me. For those that’re returning, welcome back! Anddddddd with that said, let’s talk about getting out of my head.
So yeah, have you ever wanted to do something, but then you start overthinking it and then you end up not doing it? Or what if you think and think and think about something, and before you know it all this time has passed and now it’s too late. That’s happens too. Well, whatever it is, if you’re in your head too much, it’s either stopping you or slowing you down from moving forward. And if you have mad moves to make, like myself, that’s not good. We gotta get out of that mode and focusing on DOING instead.
How do we do that, though?
Well, it’s not easy, but here are a few ideas.
Focus on action
Rather than analyzing every little detail, worrying about things others won’t even notice, and stressing out when it’s not necessary, focus on action. The more productive you are, the more you’re learning, the more efficient you’re becoming, and the more confident you will become. It’s often difficult at the beginning, but if you can be decisive and take action, you will thank yourself for it. And once you get going, it gets addictive.
Sometimes good enough is enough
I’m guilty of being a perfectionist. Sometimes I go back and fix a mix because of one word, or re-record one line because I can do it better. Whatever it is, it’s ok, provided it doesn’t hinder your progress. Once you start missing deadlines, or even become stagnant, you’re moving backwards. So what have I learned? That it’s ok to not be 100% perfect. Focus on good enough, because it’s more important to show something that you’ve done than have nothing at all.
Ask for help
If all else fails, ask for help. Whether it’s a friend, a family even, or even a doctor, if you feel that you’re constantly overthinking and not getting better, perhaps it’s time to lean on someone else. It’s possible that you just need someone to bounce ideas off of, or maybe you have anxiety and need to address it. Whatever the case, don’t feel that you’re alone. You have resources and there are people willing to help you.
So yes, that’s some of my ideas to get OUT of my head. Again, it’s not easy and it takes practice, but if it means enough to you, you will take the steps to make it happen.
And that’ll do it for me, y’all. Until the next one, stay up, stay safe, and hold ya head. Ajaxxx signing out, PEACEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
