“Get out the way”
– Ludacris on “Move B***H“
Sometimes, we as humans tend to overthink things. Is this good enough? Is the timing right? Should I get a second opinion? Whatever it is we’re up to, it’s easy to get caught up in that. Whether it’s insecurity or being a perfectionist, it happens. Whenever that does happen, ask yourself if it’s stifling your overall progress? If so, it might be time to get out of your own way…for your success, of course.
Before we get too ahead though, welcome! Welcome to the August 2018 Opinions Column. Holy cow am I late lol. I don’t know if I’ve ever been this late, but I’ll talk about that in a bit. But yeah, this is the place where I talk about whatever’s going on in my mind. Consider it a personal journal, if you may. For those returning, thanks and glad to see you back. For those new to the site, welcome!! With that said, let’s talk about getting out of the way.
So for me, I have a habit of overthinking things. I have spreadsheets and word documents and notes I make with all sorts of ideas. I also have lots of plans and lots of calendar entries too. I got mad fire ideas! You know what though? I’m an artist and I care about quality, which leads to overthinking things at times. And in my quest to reach 100%, I also delay projects. I don’t know what it is and why I get caught up in this evil cycle, but it happens. I constantly remind myself not to focus on being 100% all the time, but I also realize in a competitive sport like hip hop I gotta bring my A-game. That, in turn, ends up pushing things back. And when that happens, things don’t get done.
So what’s the takeaway? Well, whenever you’re overthinking things, you need to get out of your own way. Realize you are stifling your own progress and creating an additional roadblock to success. And when YOU become your own roadblock, that is not good. Instead, focus on execution instead of perfection. At the end of a month, or year, or whatever, you’ll be proud of how much you accomplished and how better you got. And by constantly putting out stuff, you get better AND become more efficient, which leaves you more time to perfect your craft. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
And before I go, I mentioned that I was late with posting this up top, right? You might be wondering what I got going on that got me like a week late with posting this. Well lol…there’s a baby on the way. Yessir, you heard it. Lots of exciting things have been going on that’ve been occupying me. I’m still balancing life, but yes, that’s what’s been going on.
Anywayyyyy, that’ll do it for me for this edition of the Opinions Column. I’d like to make some big changes for the site and for the music in the coming months, so look out for that. Until next time then…stay up, stay safe, and hold ya head. Ajaxxx signing out, PEACEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
