“They say time is money but really, it’s not. If we ever go broke, time is all we got”
– J. Cole on “Mr. Nice Watch“
As we get older, responsibilities seem to increase. And if you’re an ambitious person, it can be difficult to juggle it all. When it’s like that, finding time to do it all can be difficult. So how do you do it? Do you sacrifice? Push yourself harder? Or something else?
Before I get ahead though, welcome! Welcome to the *ehem* ultra late October 2018 Opinions Column. This is where I talk about whatever is on my mind. For those that’re new to the site, welcome! And for those returning, welcome BACK! And with that, let’s talk about the importance of finding time.I remember when I graduated college and I told the homey TyPeNyCe, “yo, I’m gonna have all this time now and it’s gonna be great.” Fast forward yearsssss later, and it seems the opposite happened lol. From commuting, working, and handling responsibilities, it got tough. I was expected to do more and be responsible for more things. I’m not quite sure what happened or how it happened, but I know that whatever happened isn’t what I expected. Time became more sparse and things often got away from me. And here I am, years later, still trying to understand it all lol. The takeaway, though, is that all the time I thought I’d have…well, it wasn’t what I expected. Yes, I still have time to do things, but it’s not as easy as I thought to balance it all.
To compound this situation, I started to take on more. Whereas before it was just rap, I realized that I need to be more active in various fronts because I needed to get things done. So, in addition to rap, I designed websites and graphics, edited videos, and mixed down music (among many other things, of course). So when time is decreasing, and activities increasing, it becomes a taller task. Talk about challenges.
I’ve managed to balance a lot, but I thought this topic was more relevant than ever with parenthood. How am I gonna find time to do it all when I struggle to find time now? I guess it’s one of those things that all parents think about (and even worry about) when approaching a big change. I’m confident I can still be productive, but I also realize that priorities will shift. But yeah, I’m ready for the challenge.
So what changes will I need to make? Well, I’ll need to do a better job of prioritizing so things that aren’t that important aren’t taking up my time. Additionally, I need to wake up earlier to get more things done. I’ll need to sacrifice more. I will have to filter things out. And perhaps the toughest part, I will have to ask for help.
I realize that finding time isn’t easy. However, I also realize I’m not getting younger and if I want to achieve my goals, I need to work harder and find a way to increase efficiency too. As I once read, “you have the same amount of hours in the day as Beyonce.” So yes, let’s get to it.
And that’ll do it for me. Until the next episode, stay up, stay safe, and hold ya head. Ajaxxx signing out, PEACE!
