“We doin it big
Look at what I done
Look at where I’m is
It’s only just begun”
– Drake on “The Winner“
They say there’s a time to stop thinking and start doing. That time is now.
What up y’all? What’s going on? Welcome to the January 2019 Opinions Column and the first one for the new year. Whattt! For those that’re new to the site, this is the place where I talk about what’s on my mind. For those returning, welcome back! It’s a glorious time so let’s get right into it.
So let’s talk about execution. For many of us, we’re guilty of being in our heads way too much. Instead of sharing our cool, creative ideas, we keep those ideas in our head. And if those concepts don’t materialize, then it will continue to remain an idea.
For example, instead of taking the cool song concept I have and writing it down, I keep it there…in my head. And fast forward a few weeks later, and nothing happens. I’ve done this a lot, and I don’t even know why. Perhaps it’s lack of time, being busy, or just that I don’t care enough. I dunno. All I know is, things gotta change up for the 2-0-1-9.
So that’s exactly what I’ve done (so far) for this year. Instead of keeping those ideas bottled up in my head, I’ve focused on execution. Doing is far more powerful than just thinking about it, and for a number of reasons.
1. It gives you a feeling of accomplishment
So far, I’ve done four songs/videos this year. While it’s still early, I feel really proud of this accomplishment. It wasn’t easy to write, record, mix, edit a video, and post/share all these videos each time. It took time away from other things in my life, and I had to sacrifice sleep to get here. But you know what, I feel really accomplished…and it feels extremely rewarding.
2. You learn a ton
There’s no better way to learn than by doing (at least for me haha). By editing each video, I was learning new skills. I was also going onto YouTube and Google to figure out how to do new things. This also applied to the mixing process as well. And with each song, I learn a little bit more and more…and a lot of little things will add up to a lot in the long run.
3. People take notice
While this definitely wasn’t my goal, I’ve seen lately that many people I haven’t talked to in awhile have reached out to me. That is pretty cool.
4. You get faster
One thing I’ve noticed is the more I write, record, mix, edit, etc., the faster I get at it. Instead of taking a week to knock out something, I can probably do it in a few days now. It still takes time because I also care about quality and making sure I’m not just posting whatever. It’s a balance. But yeah, I’m becoming more and more efficient with every project.
5. Being productive builds momentum
Each video pushes me forward and makes me wanna do more videos. I said this before, but productivity is like a drug. Once you become more and more productive, you want more of it. And in turn, you start putting out more quality content.
Those are just a few reasons why it’s important to do rather than overthink. So yeah, for this year, let’s focus on execution. It’s extremely powerful! Rather than overthinking and trying to perfect everything, get it to “good enough” and put it out. And at the end of the year, you’ll be able to look back and be like “wow, look at all that I’ve accomplished.” And believe me you, you will notice all those five things.
That’ll do it for me, y’all. I’ll leave you guys with the videos that I’ve done so far for this year. Of course, lots more on the way!
Here’s to a great 2019! Stay up, stay safe, and hold ya head. Ajaxxx signing out, PEACEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!
